Pakistan has
the largest non-polar glaciers in the world. Its elevation and
latitude have produced a unique set of conditions that allow the
formation of such massive alpine glacial systems. The largest of
these is the Biafo-Hispar glacier which is 122 km long. The
second largest is the Siachen at 70 km, then the Chogolungma at
69 km, the Baltoro at 65 km, and the Batura at 60 km. Along
these glaciers one can reach the most spectacular scenery the
Himalaya has to offer.
The
Baltoro Glacier. This is a 14-20 day backpacking trip that
starts at Askoli Village and ends at Concordia. From the glacier
one can take side trips to the base camps of K2, Broad Peak,
Gasherbrums, Trango Towers or over the Gondoghoro Pass into
Hushe Valley.
The
Ganalo Glacier. This is an easy 8 day trip from Raikot Bridge on
the Karakoram highway to Nanga Parbat base camp and back. From
Nanga Parbat basecamp one can see Haramosh, Diran and Rakaposhi.
