What services do you guys provide?
We are responsible for your trip to
Pakistan before you leave the US (help
getting maps, visas, air tickets, beta
etc). In Pakistan we will pick you up
from the airport, take you to a hotel in
Islamabad where you can sleep away your
jet lag. We will then fly/drive you to
Skardu (depending on the road conditions
and weather), and provide accommodation
for you in Skardu. We will also be
responsible for hiring transportation,
cooks, and porters (if needed). Once you
reach the base camp of your desired peak
we will provide logistical support on
base camp while you climb/ski. At the
completion of your climb we will take
you back to a hotel in Islamabad and
drop you off at Islamabad airport so you
can come back home and brag about your
cool trip to the Himalaya!
Why should I go with you guys versus
an international travel agency or a
local Pakistani company?
I decided to make this company when I
traveled with an Austrian friend to the
base camp of K2. While we ate the same
food, shared transportation, shared a
room in Skardu, I paid $400 for the trip
whereas my friend landed up paying
$1500.
International companies don't contribute
to local economy and are ridiculously
expensive. Pakistani companies don't
realize that most climbers are poor.
We operate at a smaller scale and all
our trips are tailor-made to the needs
of our clients.
What sort of experience do I need for
climbing in the Himalaya?
For a first ascent on a big wall or
snowy giant we require that you are
comfortable at leading 5.10 trad and
have good Alpine ice-climbing skills. (remember pure
rock towers higher than 18,000 feet may
have ice near the summit)
What sort of experience do I need for
backpacking in the Himalaya?
Most backpacking trips (trekking) will
involve glacier travel, so we require
that you are familiar with glacier
travel and crevasse rescue and that you
have at least 5 years of backpacking
experience. Most treks in the Himalaya
will start at around 9000 feet and go up
to 18,000 feet. This means you should be
used to high-altitude. We recommend
spending a few nights over 10,000 feet
and seeing how your body reacts. I have
had friends who contracted HAPE at
13,000 feet)
What is HAPE?
HAPE stands for high altitude pulmonary
edema. Lungs fill up with fluid due to
poor acclimatization, and without
immediate descent it can be fatal. The
symptoms of HAPE include a dry cough
that turns into a gurgling cough
followed by pink foam in the mouth.
Another form of Edema is Cerebral Edema
that is also fatal and harder to
diagnose. More common is Acute Altitude
Sickness which can be mild such as
shortness of breath, headaches and
nausea or in severe cases it can also be
fatal. Talk to your doctor before
planning a trip to the Himalaya. (To
acclimatize: 3000 feet of elevation gain
per day is reasonable, if you ascend
higher make sure you sleep at lower
elevations, and keep yourself hydrated)
How much does airfare to Pakistan
cost?
If you purchase your tickets from a
Pakistani travel agent in the US and do
so before June 1st you can get roundtrip
fares between $900-$1100 otherwise
roundtrip airfare ranges between
$1500-$1700.
How much will a month of climbing
cost?
That depends on whether you are going
for a trekking peak or if you are going
for a first ascent. First ascents tend
to cost a little bit more because of
longer approaches (a month can cost you
about $1500).
Where do I get the money to visit
Pakistan?
There are several climbing grants
available (especially if you want to do
a first ascent). Contact your local
climbing gear dealers.
The American
Alpine Club
offers various grants, so does
North Face,
and
Marmot.
What is a "trekking peak"?
A trekking peak is one that you can
summit by scrambling (no technical
climbing) these peaks still require
basic mountaineering skills such as rope
handling, snow anchors, and the use of a
mountaineering axe.
What is the best time to visit?
Climbing season starts late May and goes
till the end of August. Backpacking
season starts in May and goes till
September.
How safe is Pakistan?
North Pakistan is very safe. Unlike
Nepal our mountains have no Maoist
rebels. In the mountaineering history of
Pakistan there have been only 2
non-climbing related deaths. one was a
woman walking alone at 3:00 am in the
streets of Gilgit, and the other was a
biker traveling alone at night on the
Karakoram Highway in the Chilas area)
How do I apply for a Visa to
Pakistan?
You need to apply for your visa to
Pakistan as soon as you have your
airline tickets in hand. The application
can be obtained from the
Pakistan Embassy. The Visa process
takes a while so apply ASAP. The
application fee is $120.
What gear /equipment would I need?
That also depends on what you are
planning on doing. Big walls require big
racks, whereas backpacking doesn't
require any climbing gear. Generally I
pack the following items:
4 season tent
down bag good to 0 degrees Fahrenheit
down jacket
sleeveless fleece
water proof shell top
water proof pants
ankle length boots that provide good
support
wool socks
long underwear
a small towel for cleaning up
a cloth to wrap around the head (protect
from sun)
a wool hat
walking stick (carrying 2 takes away 30%
of the weight of your pack away from
your legs to to your arms)
I don't take my water filter with me to
the Himalaya because silt suspended in
glacial waters plug it and make it
useless.....glacial water is safe to
drink for the most part...to be extra
careful you can use your preferred water
purification method
If you don't already have these the cost
of buying everything will run between
$800-1500 (depending on what brands you
use)
